Im sure some people will not have seen that Cisco have added a new top of the range Firewall to their lineup. If you are fairly new to Cisco Routers, getting them up and running can be a sizable challenge. The problem is that getting the basic functionality out of a Cisco Router is only the beginning; you now need to secure it. Sure, you can find yourself some confusing manuals at various tech sites, but what does it all mean? Can’t tell your proxy arp from your elbow? Hopefully this article will help. Cisco ASA 5505 Review Most people these days are happy to have a Linksys, Netgear or D-Link router attached to their broadband connections. The basic functionality and throughput that they provide are ample for the casual user. But when you need more out of a device, and are willing to spend the money to achieve this, the market can become a bit of a mine field. At the time of writing, the 5505 is available for around £350 retail. Those of you who work in the Cisco arena may be able to get them for less. Personally, I have used a Cisco 831, 1721 and more recently a Cisco ASA 5505 Security Appliance for terminating my cable connection. It is the latter that we will be taking a look at today! A few days ago we posted about building a CCIE lab at home using Emulation. If you were interested in that, but want something a little more user friendly, then read on. This one could be useful for anybody looking to upgrade to a newer IOS or feature set. Crucial, one of the worlds biggest Memory manufacturers now sell Cisco Compatible Memory. Simple go to www.crucial.com select Cisco as the manufacturer and then pick your device type. It will tell you which memory you need and how many free slots you will have. This can be useful in a couple of scenarios. Firstly, you may like to take advantage of “bufferwrap” and store months of ASA logs in flash. Alternatively, you may be replacing damaged flash memory in the device. Hi All, The gallery can be accessed by hitting the button in the bar above Merry Christmas all! This one came as quite a suprise to me. There is no Cisco IPSEC based VPN client available for Vista 64. Not only that, but it does not look like there will be one any time soon. They are trying to nudge people in the direction of the AnyConnect client which uses TLS for security! Unfortunately, this cannot be used with the PIX series of hardware appliances. As soon as we get more information on this front it will be posted here. Hi All, A quick update to the site! We have finally started adding good quality Images of Cisco products to the site. They can be found at the Gallery or can be seen rolling by in the slideshow to your right! Now when you need to figure out what interfaces and options a device has you can look through these images. They should be useful when you are supporting a device remotely and cannot remember what they look like! So far we have the ASA 5505, Cat 500 express switch and the 1242 Wireless AP. We are hoping to add more as soon as possible! If you have any requests for Images, leave a comment and we will see what can be done. As a lot of you will know, the cost of the CCIE lab equipment is what scares a lot of people aware from attempting it. The CCIE has traditionally been regarded as something that cannot be done independantly. Most people get the backing of their employer when it gets to this point. What if there was an alternative? What if you could build a CCIE lab to practice on for the cost of a Good PC? Interested? Check out the following link: http://www.internetworkpro.org/wiki/CCIE_Security_Home_Lab_with_dynamips_%26_Co This covers building the CCIE security Lab using freely available emulators and VMWARE. No, it probably wont be perfect, but it certainly wont be £40,000 either. Give it a try and let us know how you get on! |
